Can You Change a Toxic Environment Before It Changes You? | The Truth Hurts, Episode 84

Episode 84 · January 16, 2025

Episode notes

A toxic environment can take many forms. It can take hold at work, among friends, or even within your own family. It is sad, but it is the truth, and sometimes the truth hurts.

There is no simple empirical measure of what makes an environment toxic. The experience is subjective and varies from person to person. Even so, one warning sign is worth taking seriously: negative behavior happens routinely, no one questions it, and there are no consequences. It becomes the norm, the accepted way things work. That alone probably means you’re in a toxic environment.

Imagine walking into a room that smells awful. Stay there long enough, and eventually you stop noticing. We can get used to almost anything. But don’t accept anything and everything as normal, especially not shit.

We owe it to ourselves to keep taking stock of our surroundings and asking, “Is this environment good for me?” Whether it’s your workplace, your circle of friends, or your relationship with your spouse, a toxic environment will destroy you.

If you’re holding on to the idea that you’ll be the one to change the environment, here’s the hard truth: a toxic environment is far more likely to change you than you are to change it. Put a good person in a bad environment, and they will start doing bad things. The reverse can happen too. Put someone who’s a complete nobody in a supportive, encouraging environment, and they will become a good person, even a leader. Your environment matters enormously.

Listen in and find out how it’s done.
