Free Will: Where Choice Begins | Episode 35

Episode 35 · November 30, 2023

Episode notes

Do we truly have free will? If so, where does it begin? Drawing on Kabbalistic teachings, Gili and Tal ask what drives us as human beings and what it means to choose freely.

Desire can deceive us. We may think we’re directing it when, in fact, desire itself is drawing a certain kind of life toward us. Gili and Tal explore the deep connection between our outer reality and our inner makeup, as well as the confusion that can arise when different desires become tangled within us.

Our sages taught, “Everything is foreseen, yet freedom of choice is given.” This teaching draws a crucial distinction: we can’t control every event, but we can choose whether to respond and how. Our freedom takes shape in that response.

The conversation then turns to a Kabbalistic teaching: the entire universe is built on the desire to receive, and this desire drives it. The episode offers a new perspective on the difference between the desire to receive for ourselves and the desire to bestow.

In her practical tips segment, Gili offers tools for working with these different desires. She explores how to distinguish the desire to receive from the desire to bestow and how to find a balance that lets you exercise free will consciously.

About the podcast

Listening to The Truth Hurts feels like sitting in on a healing session.

The truth can hurt. It’s right there in the name. But we’re not here to cause pain. Quite the opposite.

In each episode, two women sit down for an honest conversation: an Emotional Healer and her client.

We talk about healing and consciousness, faith and science, the body and soul, personal growth, energy, and different approaches to healing. Above all, we face the truth no one says out loud: everything around us is upside down.
