Someone doesn’t call me, and before I even have time to wonder why, the wound answers: “He doesn’t really care about you.” Someone chooses someone else over me, and the wound delivers its verdict: “You’re not good enough.” Someone makes a comment, and in an instant the wound has turned it into proof that something is wrong with me.
Notice what happens here. The wound always speaks quickly. It doesn’t think; it reacts. It doesn’t check; it’s certain. It isn’t curious; it already knows.
The soul moves differently. It doesn’t rush, and it doesn’t deny the pain. But it doesn’t immediately turn that pain into the truth, either. It knows the truth is broader than that first story.
The next time anger, hurt, or fear rises in you, ask yourself: Who’s speaking right now? Is it my soul, or has my wound taken the floor? Between what happens to you and how you choose to respond, there is a small, almost invisible moment. It’s so brief that sometimes it feels as though it isn’t there at all.
